Why is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

Summer is here.

Southeastern PA has already had quite a few hot days and it’s only going to get hotter. One of the worst things that can happen at the beginning of the summer season is an improperly functioning air conditioning system: You turn it on, and it blows out hot air. This is why we always recommend starting your air conditioner before you need it. You want to make sure it works properly, and if it doesn’t, you need to have enough time to troubleshoot the issue and solve it before you really need to cool your house down.

What’s Causing My Air Conditioner to Blow Warm Air?

When it comes to troubleshooting issues with your A/C system, oftentimes the problem is minor. So before you pull out your wallet to buy a whole new condenser unit — take a pause. Start with the least labor-intensive issue first. This method of thinking can prevent a big headache, and can potentially save you a lot of money.

Check Your Thermostat

If your air conditioning system is emitting warm air, check the thermostat. It may sound too obvious, but make sure your thermostat is not set to “warm”. If this isn’t the problem, you may have to dig a little deeper.

Change the batteries. They may have enough energy left in them to control the led display of your thermostat, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they have enough juice to effectively power the device.

Clean Your Air Filters

All air conditioning systems use filters. These are in place to make sure that the air you breathe in your home is clean. And while they do a great job of keeping the air clean, they need regular servicing. If your filters are clogged or dirty, your cooling system is going to have a much harder time circulating the air properly through your vents.

So turn off your A/C unit and remove the filters to give them a proper cleaning. It is recommended to service your air filters every 30 to 90 days, depending on the air quality in your home. If you have pets, for example, you may need to clean your filters more often.

Clean Your Evaporator Coils

Evaporator coils are an instrumental component of your air conditioning system. The coils absorb hot air and cool it. If they are not functioning at their best, they may very well be the cause of your hot air issue.

There are many online resources to learn from if you intend to do this job yourself, but depending on your system, it can sometimes be a complicated fix. Don’t be afraid to reach out to us at Bucks County Fuel for help.

Refrigerant Leak

Make sure you don’t have a refrigerant leak. If your A/C unit is leaking refrigerant, it won’t be able to make any cold air at all. The easiest way to tell if this is the case is to take a look at the evaporator coils. If they are frosted over, yet there is no cold air being produced, chances are this is the problem.

Condenser Fan Not Functioning Properly

We’re sure you’ve noticed that your outdoor condenser unit has a big fan at the top. That fan removes the heat produced by the coil from the condenser. If it’s not working the way it should, it could be the culprit of your temperature problem.
