Why Shouldn’t You Cover Your Air Vents?

In a large house in the dead of winter, it can take a moment for your home to come up to a desirable temperature. Because of this, it’s common for homeowners to close off vents in less occupied rooms in an effort to direct the heat elsewhere. But does this actually heat other parts of your home faster? Is there any reason not to close off vents or put furniture over them?

Never Put Furniture Over Your Air Vents

Let’s get this one out of the way. You should never place furniture over an air vent. Why not? Not only does it disrupt the airflow of your HVAC system, but it also ruins your furniture. The incessant heat and humidity will cause wooden furniture to expand and warp. The same factors can create a mold and mildew problem for fabric or leather furniture. And while it is unlikely, blocking an air vent does create an additional fire hazard. We know this can be frustrating, as vents are often placed at the perfect spot for furniture. But finding a new way to arrange your space will definitely pay off in the long run.

Covering Vents Can Damage Your HVAC System

Your HVAC system is designed for air to flow smoothly throughout the home, not hit obstructions. When you close off vents–while it may prevent the majority of heat from entering that room–the air is still being forced up against the vent. The excess air continually pushed in the wrong direction increases the pressure within your system. This kind of pressure can damage parts such as the heat exchanger.

Increased Risk of Mold & Mildew

If you live in a damp or humid climate (like we do in Southeastern Pennsylvania), closing off vents can present a significant risk of mold developing. Keeping vents closed can allow mold to develop in and around your vents, as well as in the ductwork. This hard-to-clean area will then circulate a mildew smell throughout the rest of your home.

Closing Vents Can Actually Waste Energy

The increased pressure in your HVAC system can not only damage your heat exchanger but your ductwork. The constant pressure wears on your ductwork easily. And if you have an older home, you’re at higher risk of cracks developing. Cracks in your air ducts lead to continuously escaping air, creating a significantly larger energy waste than just heating the room you closed off.
